March 12th News from UNACC

Just wanted to inform those who have not heard that the Snow Crust Moon Powwow in Taunton for Saturday, March 14th had to be canceled due to a roof collapse at the Armory.  Luckily, no one was hurt but they have closed the building down till it is repaired.  UNACC was supposed to vend food there.

There is NO UNACC meeting on Wednesday, March 18th, instead we will be going to the Ayer Multicultural Night at the Ayer High School on Washington Street on Thursday, March 19th.  We will meet there by 6:30 PM.

On Saturday, March 21st, we will have our 17th Annual Winter Gathering and Potluck.  This event goes from 12 PM – 5 PM.  Drumming, dancing, raffles, socializing and good food.  This is a potluck, so please, bring a dish to share. ** *** Please note, this is a Saturday event and not Sunday.  Normally we have our gatherings on Sundays!

On Saturday, March 28th, at 6:30 PM, Matt along with his assistant, Lorena, will teach a bead loom class.  The cost of the class is $5.00 per person.  UNACC has 10 looms which can be used at UNACC but cannot leave the building. We have 6 looms for sale @ $6.00 ea.  A small feather pattern will be taught and you should have enough time to complete the beaded strip by end of class.

I am still working on setting up the visitation/talking circle at MCI Shirley and the Souza/Baranowski Prison in Shirley.  I’ve placed calls to them both and I am waiting word back from them.  I would like to be a bit more educated on what they want and the procedures of us getting in there.  I will keep you posted.

If you would like to sponsor our 20th Annual Unity Days Powwow with either a food donation (for the powwow) or a monetary donation to help offset the cost of purchasing the food/paying for permits/or the other essentials, please see Nancy Amirault.  If a donation is given, your name or the company’s name will be recognized as being a contributor.  To date, we have 3 sponsors, Katsuk & Darlene and Nancy Amirault.  Kat and Darlene gave a monetary donation and Nancy will be picking up the cost of the “Eyes on Owls” program which will be held at 2 PM on the Saturday of the Powwow.  Every little bit helps.

UNACC does have a Face Book page. There seems to be some confusion with this.  On Face Book, if you do a search for United Native American Cultural Center, you will find us.  If you “Like” the page, you will be notified when a new update has been posted.    So, please remember, you can view the page but in order to see the notifications from the page, you need to “Like” the UNACC page.  Let me know if you have any questions, please.

And last but not least, an update on Roland – He is doing well.  He is still at the rehab in Gardner, MA.  With luck, he will be home on Saturday.  Today, (Thursday, March 12th), he is heading to UMASS in Worcester to have his staples/stitches out.  Please, keep him in your prayers that he is able to come home as planned.
